Topic
The Summer School on Mid-Infrared Quantum Sensing and Technologies is a 5-day learning programme designed to offer students in-depth insights into the highly interdisciplinary topic of quantum technologies and sensing at mid-infrared wavelengths.
Mid infrared quantum technologies are emerging to bring exciting advances in sensing and beyond. The mid-infrared range of optical spectrum offers the best sensitivity to properties of material systems, yet presents multiple exciting challenges in generation, processing and detection of signals, that requires combining expertise in quantum optics and quantum information, quantum technologies, ultrafast optics, solid-state and terharetz physics, material science, spectroscopy and beyond.
The program is designed to engage young scientists, mainly PhD students and post-docs, both experimentalists and theoreticians. The goal is training and fostering collaboration in this interdisciplinary field. The five-day event will feature lectures and workshop sessions conducted by leading scientists in these areas and will provide a forum for communication between young researchers and trainers, including poster sessions for participants. The meeting will take place entirely in person that optimizes discussions and networking opportunities among all attendees.
Program
The program will include experts from a diverse range of research backgrounds, from quantum optics and quantum information to material scientists, and mid infrared experts, as well as soft-skills & technical workshops.
The School dates are: 23 to 28 June 2024. The program will start in the evening on 23 June and conclude early afternoon on 28 June.
The topics include (but are not limited to):
- quantum optics
- sources of quantum light
- single photon detectors
- mid-infrared materials
- quantum sensing
- quantum metrology
- polariton physics and chemistry
- condensed matter physics
- terahertz physics and engineering
- nanophotonics
- plasmonics

About the MIRAQLS Project:
MIRAQLS project is an international scientific collaboration between Europe and Canada aimed to advance novel quantum technologies, running since October 2022. The goal of MIRAQLS is to increase our ability to sense minute changes in the environment around us using mid-infrared (MIR) light (wavelength range from 2 μm to 15 μm). Optical sensors operating in this band are essential for a wide range of applications owing to the overlap with unique molecular absorption signatures. MIRAQLS aims to tackle some of the biggest challenges that have hampered the development of MIR quantum technologies by understanding how to control the quantum properties of light and matter at the fundamental limits of their interaction.
The official launch date of the MIRAQLS project coincided with the announcement of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics, which was awarded to Professors Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger for “their experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell’s inequalities and paving the way for quantum information science”. Our team is excited to exploit entanglement and superposition principles in the mid-infrared frequency range to build better optical sensors of tomorrow, poised for a direct positive impact on the well-being of modern society. Some applications include increased accuracy of medical imaging for early personalized diagnostics in medicine, comprehensive and real-time detection of pollutants in the atmosphere, drug discovery, improved manufacturing yields via better quality control, and many more.
